Betting odds men’s Irish Cycling Champs

We’re not sure where you stand about betting on cycling events, but the Paddy Power odds for the National Cycling Championships look a bit strange to us.

Ryan Mullen is the odds on favourite for this evening’s TT, at 1/6.

And while Nicolas Roche and Eddie Dunbar were 1st and 2nd last year, they are at 5/1 and 14/1 respectively.

Odds are offered on a total of 10 riders in the TT field – see full list below – with some of the riders ranked at 200/1.

That’s not a reflection on their TT ability as some of them – including Ian Richardson and Cian Delaney – are among the best testers in the country.

Instead, the much wider odds reflect the gap between the best of our domestic riders and the level that our international pros are at.

In the road race, Roche is installed at favourite at 7/4. He is followed by Sam Bennett at 3/1 and Eddie Dunbar at 9/1.

Matt Brammeier, the man who has won the title four times and was 2nd last year, is 11/1.

Former champion Damien Shaw is 18/1, despite winning the title two years ago and having been in the form of his life this season.

There are other names in the 100/1 bracket who could win on their day, and if they got a bit of luck of course.

Philip Lavery is one of them; a man you would never bet against.
