Having taken three top ten placings on the first five stages of the Tour of Britain, An Post-Sean Kelly’s Sam Bennett withdrew from the race on the roads of Wales today due to a niggling knee injury.

Bennett told stickybottle this evening that given disruptions to recent seasons because of injury, he decided to err on the side of caution today and pull out of the race when he felt a niggle in his knee had the potential to get worse.

He recognised the beginnings of some symptoms that could lead to tendonitis if he pressed on today and then to the finish of the race on Sunday.

“It was time to stop, the form is good so I need to stay healthy now,” he said.

He does not feel the issue is a serious one and firmly believes a few days away from racing will clear up the problem and put him in good stead for the U23 World Road Race Championships in Valkenburg in a week’s time.

Bennett is clearly in the form of his life, and while any withdrawal due to a knee problem is regrettable, he appears to have taken the responsible attitude in the interests of safeguarding his condition for the Worlds and the remainder of the season.
