Benefit fund established to help son of cycling Dave Garland battle his illness

Davey Garland: The first to do you a turn off the bike and the last to miss one on it

Last April Dublin Wheeler’s cyclist Dave Garland was diagnosed with liver and colon cancer. Dave has been a familiar face on the cycling scene, both in the bunch and travelling as a soigneur with national teams at different times from the 1980s.

The traditional treatments for his illness during the past 12 months have not been as successful as hoped and Dave has undertaken a more holistic treatment approach to his recovery.

As he is unable to work, this is placing an increasing financial burden on his young family.

To help Dave obtain the maximum benefit from this new regime, his family and friends from the cycling community are putting on a table quiz night to raise funds.

Dave is a valued member of the Dublin Wheelers and was an integral part of the racing team during the 1980's and 1990's.

Marriage and family rearing have replaced the bike for him in recent years but Davey always keeps in touch and is a regular face at the John Sweeney Memorial each year.

His home in Wicklow is a halfway coffee stop on the DWCC racing squad’s long pre-season training spin.

Those particular spins are fondly remembered due to the hospitality shown by Dave and Louise. The homemade cakes and scones and the smell of fresh baking that greet the club riders every February add to the banter, craic and general good humour that binds club mates all over the country and on which the lifelong friendships all of us in the sport enjoy.

At stickybottle, some of us are lucky enough to call Davey a friend. We want to wish him and his family the very best of luck in the battle that lies ahead and look forward to the day when he can join us for a spin on the roads of North County Dublin.
