This clip shows just how hard Ben King dug to win stage 9 of the Vuelta, having difficulty walking up stairs after his effort.

The American, who is originally from Virginia, took his first ever Grand Tour stage win on stage 4. And then follow it up on Sunday.

He pushed clear in the day’s main breakaway on the 200.8km stage. And with 19km to go he attacked the group he was in.

But some 10km of that was up La Covatilla to the summit finish, with gradients up to 16.4 per cent.

King (Dimension Data) was chased hard all the way by Bauke Mollema – the Trek-Segafredo man ending the day 2nd as he had done to Dan Martin on the same mountain back in 2011.

The lone leader and his pursuer looked spent on Sunday for much of the climb but they battled on.

And as the first clip below shows, King was delighted and wiped out in equal measure immediately after the finish.

"To get one win was a dream come true," he said of claiming the fourth stage. I worked hard for it and made wining a Grand Tour stage a major career goal.

"So today was really nice to show it wasn't a random thing that first one. The team and I prepared for opportunities like this.

I've never suffered like that in my life on the last climb but I'm sure it will settle in now. It's a real honour.
