Laurens de Plus has escaped serious injury in this incredible crash down into a ravine at the Tour of Lombardy.

The young Belgian was descending at the time, with about 40km to go.

He was at the front of the race chasing down lone leader Mickaël Chérel (Ag2r-La Mondiale) at the time.

However, he took a sweeping right hand bend going downhill at speed too wide. And that resulted in a crash ending his Lombardy ride.

The bike ran away from him, sending him crashing into the roadside barrier.

But such was his speed that both cyclist and bike were thrown over the barriers and into the ravine.

The camera panned after him and the drop he was sent into looked pretty deep. However, he was tended to by several doctors who managed to reach him very quickly.

And his team, QuickStep, has confirmed he did not sustain any serious injury.
