Robin Seymour takes victory on the St Anne’s Park course last month
The first national cycling title of 2012 will be settled just one week into the New Year when the leading cyclocross riders in the country gather in St Anne’s Park on Dublin’s north side for what promises to be an epic showdown.
While Stevens Supercross Cup winner Robin Seymour and Ulster Cyclocross Series winner Roger Aiken will start as joint favourites, with national medals up for grabs they are likely to be pushed hard by a host of others.
Matt Adair (Unattached) has shown some great promise in the Ulster races this year, and it would not be beyond him to give his two more seasoned rivals a scare.
Connor McConvey is currently in Spain at a training camp with his An Post-Sean Kelly team and may be the man to upset the dominant duo if he decides to ride the championships.
However, the title race falls just a couple of weeks before his road season gets underway in France so his participation is unclear.
Others likely to be in the mix are Ryan Sherlock (SportActive), who has continued to race while on a recent trip to the US, and Evan Ryan of Team WORC.
The race is on January 7th on what was regarded as probably the best course, and most spectator friendly, of the recent Supercross Cup.
Last time out in St Anne’s in Raheny it was current national champion Seymour of Team WORC who took the honours from McConvey.
But Banbridge CC’s Aiken was a non-starter that day so it will be very interesting to see if he can get the better of Seymour on January 7th, or indeed if somebody else can best either of them on the day.
There will also be a women’s title up for grabs on the day. While there is a B race down for decision, unfortunately it is a non championship event.
The organisers – Team WORC – promise us that they’re going to crank up the atmosphere on the day and are determined to pull off another great race on the technical but fast course, to round off what has been a great cyclocross season so far.
We’ll bring you more details as we get then. And we’ll have a full preview of the B race and women’s championship in the weeks to come. Stay tuned.
