Fresh from his victory at Tour of the Alps, Romain Bardet has won more fans today after forgoing his chance to chase back onto the peloton at Liège-Bastogne-Liège in favour of helping Julian Alaphilippe.
World champion Alaphilippe crashed off the road and towards some trees during the mass incident in the peloton with about 60km to go. Bardet (Team DSM) could see that the QuickStep Alpha Vinyl rider was in a bad way and climbed down off the road to help him.
Bardet then signaled for help to be brought to Alaphilippe and stayed with him as other riders were getting back on their bikes in the hope they could regain the peloton after such a bad crash.
Neither Bardet nor Alaphilippe were among the finishers today, not surprisingly. Alaphilippe has been taken to hospital for checks.
