Richard Carapaz saw his time losses compounded on La Vuelta stage 3 when he was hit with a 20-second time penalty for an illegal feed in the finale of the race.
The Olympic road race champion had already faded on the final climb and lost one minute to his main rivals in the overall before the additional 20 seconds was added.
That brought his time loss on race favourite and defending champion Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) to 1:20 for the day and 2:15 in total, due to the time he lost on Saturday's TT.
Carapaz's team mate Adam Yates has already lost 51 seconds to Roglič; most of that when he got caught out by a late crash on stage 2. And while Egan Bernal finished with Roglič today and yesterday, he lost 27 seconds to him in Saturday's TT.
Today's stage - some 202.8km from Santo Domingo de Silos to Picón Blanco - was dominated by a breakaway. Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) rode away from his breakaway companions on the last climb to win the stage and take the race lead.
