Having come to the An Post Rás two years ago hoping to ride for the podium, Clemens Fankhauser won the race.
And this year he has come back and done it again.
The Austrian said his victory this time around was unexpected and he was delighted to have pulled off the victory after leading the way from stage 3.
The 30-year-old added the win was a great reward for his team who had worked all the way to Skerries to control the bunch.
And with around 20 riders capable of challenging him for the yellow jersey, his and his team mates’ job was a testing one.
Asked if he would like to move up to ProContinental level – from his Continental Tirol Team – he said he would need “many more” results as big teams normally plumped for younger talent.
But he is king of the Rás again and for now that’s all that matters.
He insisted despite having won the race for the last three years, his team has unfinished business with the event as it had never won any other classification or a stage.
