Eoin Morton came into this Rás as an amateur rider capable of winning big races on the home front and having gained his first Irish team selection; for a race in the US next month.
But he departs the week a Rás stage winner; an honour that will follow him around for the rest of his career and indeed the rest of his life.
And he will for years be pointed to as the perfect example of what county riders can do in the Rás.
The UCD-FitzCycles.ie rider took a brilliant victory on stage 2 from Mullingar to Charleville after riding clear with fellow county man Bryan McCrystal (Louth ASEA-Wheelworx).
Morton had begun his week the previous day by taking the king of the mountains jersey.
He was constantly on the attack all week, and later in the race his aggression paid dividends again when he was 3rd on stage 5 into Clonakilty.
Shane Stokes caught up with him at the finish in Skerries to discuss a whirlwind week and what’s in store in the months ahead.
