Audax Ireland new 24 hour TT for Co Kildare

Long distance time trial racing may not be as popular in Ireland as it is Britain, but Audax Ireland is trying to change that.

It is promoting a new 24-hour TT set for Co Kildare in July.

The concept is a pretty simple, if grueling one; the event doing exactly what it says on the tin.

Participants ride as far as they can in 24 hours. And the biggest distance recording in the period is declared winner.

The course is over a 40km loop. The British record is 541.24 miles, or 871km; set by Andy Wilkinson over June 24-25 in 2011.

Given few Irish riders will have ridden a 24-hour TT before, it’s unlikely that record will be reached.

But it will be interesting to see the winning distance, especially if some of our more accomplished endurance riders take part.

The race will be run on open roads, with the riders setting off at one-minute intervals.

The route is over relatively flat roads with a few climbs on a 44.6-kilometre circuit near Athy; see below.

As the event draws to a close, the circuit is shortened with closer time-stations. That allows for the finishing distance of each rider to be more accurately measured.

Riders can stop as often as they like. And each rider is permitted logistical assistance from the roadside.

The organisers say the circuit has been chosen so as to be as flat and sheltered as possible, on a course with a smooth surface.

They also believe the circuit is long enough so it does not become too repetitive. But it is also short enough to allow riders pass support crew very often.
