Gardai
in Co Cavan are investigating an assault during which an Argos catalogue was
thrown at a cyclist by one of the occupants of a passing car.
The
victim has taken to local radio to explain what happened and now a criminal
inquiry is underway.
Argos
catalogues are large and heavy and could cause considerable injury to a
cyclist.
The
victim, who did not want to be identified on air, said the catalogue hit him
and he crashed onto the road as a result.
The
assault occurred as the cyclist was about 100 metres from his home on the
Cootehill to Cavan road.
"The gardai told me to go in and
get each court item listed, so if they do could get the culprits; that they'd have
a case against them," he told the Joe Finnegan show.
He added
a woman who was in the area helped him after he fell. But he still required
medical attention.
"She took after them, after she got
me up off the ground, and she went out as far as Rathkenny to see could she
catch up with them and get a number plate but unfortunately she didn't,"
he said.
But he was still hopeful somebody in the
area using dashcams may have recorded the vehicle the catalogue was thrown
from.
"There's lots of private cameras
around the Cavan Road, I'm truly confident that the number plate will be got,"
he said.
Phil Skelton of the Stayin’ Alive at 1.5
campaign said the incident was a very dangerous one.
He believed it underlined the need for
cyclists to buy cameras that they can fit their bikes and helmets.
"It's an investment. Some of them
can be a bit expensive, but it's worth it,” he said.
"I can tell you, if someone throws
something at me, I have them on camera, and I know where I'm going directly - a
Garda station."
