Aqua Blue Sport riders get (very) lost on epic Croatia descent

The road went up and up (and up). But when the riders were going down the mountain the problems began. And it turned into a bit of an epic for two Aqua Blue Sport riders.

Not content with going through the ringed on the final 30km climb at the Tour of Croatia, two Aqua Blue Sport riders would get hopelessly lost.

Conor Dunne went off course with a group of others; the stage clearly not marked out very well.

And though the Irishman eventually found his team camper van, he soon realised his team mate Andy Fenn was also MIA.

Dunne is one of the best riders in the pro peloton to follow on social media, banging out good banter with impressive frequency.

He took to Instagram to outline the ordeal he endured yesterday.

He described the third stage as “lumpy” but said he was happy to have helped Dan Pearson to 6th place. That was a great result considering how long the climb to the finish was.

But after helping Pearson onto the climb, Dunne obviously had to finish the stage himself. And it was at that point his “adventure” began.

“We had to slog up the final 30km (yes, 30km) climb,” he said. It was actually one of the most epic climbs I’ve ridden; would highly recommend.

“1,800m altitude gain in 30km from sea level. Insane views. After a quick refuel at the top, jacket on and ride down to the bus.

“Quite enjoyed the descent and the views, knowing the day was done. However, I then realised I was completely lost.

“I had gone the wrong way, along with a large number of my colleagues in the peloton. Balls.

“Thankfully I was still in radio range and managed to contact mission control and find my way back to the camper; 7.30pm with approx 10mins of daylight to spare and 6 hours on the clock.

“It was pretty funny when I got to the camper… until we realised Andy Fenn was still lost.

“The camper stayed behind while a search party was sent out into the surrounding mountains. Meanwhile, I jumped straight in the transporter to make it back to the hotel.

“Fifteen minutes down the road, darkness setting in, we find Andy Fenn absolutely and totally lost. He is in better spirits than expected.

“And we proceed to raise his spirits further with banterous chit chat. Anyway with all the flock accounted for we restart our drive to the hotel.

“(We’re) still an hour and a half away as I write this. Eaten a bowl of rice and half a loaf of bread. And I cannot wait for dinner!”
