The Irish-registered Pro Continental cycling team Aqua Blue Sport has received a wildcard entry to two of the sport’s most iconic races, Liege Bastogne Liege and Fleche Wallone.
Those brutal Belgian contests make up two of the three races that comprise the Ardennes Classics with Amstel Gold the other.
Arguably it's the Belgian races that Aqua Blue Sport has been invited to that carry greater prestige.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege, or often referred to as La Doyenne, is one of cycling's five monument events, with the others being the Tour of Flanders, Milan San-Remo, Paris-Roubaix and the Giro Il Lombardia.
Dan Martin and Sean Kelly are the only two Irish riders to have won Liege, the former having done so in 2013 during the best season of his career so far.
Aqua Blue Sport will get a taste for the hardship of what lies ahead when they tackle the first major one-day race of the season this Saturday in Het Nieuwsblad.
Fleche Wallone takes place on April 19th and Liege will be tackled four days later. Aqua Blue Sport is one of seven teams to receive wildcard entries.
