A newspaper columnist in Donegal has said he would never have criticised a group of cyclists had he known they were taking part in an event to remember a local rider killed in a traffic collision last year.
Caoimhinn Barr, a columnist with the Inishowen Independent, wrote this week about encountering a group of cyclists on the road from Derry to Moville just after midday on Saturday.
He said they were delaying hundreds of motorists behind them.
“My side of the road was mostly clear but I frequently had to duck in toward the left as one or two increasingly irate motorists coming the other way decided they could stand no more and edged out onto my side in a desperate bid to get past,” he wrote.
“Judging by the faces of some drivers, they had worked up a near murderous rage inside their (cars)…”.
Unfortunately Barr did not realise the event was dedicated to the memory of local cyclist and charity fundraiser Adrian Mullan who died when struck by a van while out training in Donegal last October.
Barr said he “couldn’t argue” with stickybottle highlighting the column, saying: “I would never have written it had I known the event was for a deceased cyclist.”
He said he hoped he had not caused hurt to Adrian’s family and friends and was sorry if he had.
To his credit, he also said he would return to the topic in next week’s column and apologise for his remarks.
