Having been forced to call off their 2020 edition due to Covid-19, the organisers of the Wicklow 200 sprotive have now been forced to scrap the 2021 event.
The news has been announced just a week after the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, believed to be the biggest sportive in the country, also said it would not be holding an event this year due to the pandemic.
The Wicklow 200 was not due to be held until June while the Ring of Kerry event was not due to be held until July.
The organisers of the Wicklow 200, which is owned by the Irish Veteran Cyclists' Association, said they had no option but to cancel for this year.
The cancellation comes amid continued uncertainty around what events would be allowed in the months ahead under Covid-19 restrictions.
“We are very sorry to let you know
that due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions and rate of infection the Wicklow
200 cycle will not be going ahead this year,” the organisers said.
“Registered participants will be
automatically transferred to Wicklow 200, 2022, which is planned for June 12th,
and will be emailed to-day with details.”
They added if the entries being
rolled forward by 12 months did not suit any rider who had signed up, those
riders should contact the event via email at [email protected] no later than February
26th.
The statement added the team
behind the event was “very sorry for the disappointment” that the cancellation
of this year’s sportive may cause and they looked forward to having riders back
on the roads for the Wicklow 200 next year.
