Another cyclist killed in Dublin after hit by car; second in 12 days

Gardai are investigating after a cyclist died this morning in a crash with a car. It was the second cyclist fatality in the capital in 12 days.
Another cyclist has been killed on the streets of Dublin after being in collission with a car in the early hours of this morning.
The collission was the second fatality in the city this year involving a cyclist and the third in the Republic since 2017 began.
The latest death occurred just before 1am in Dublin 8 when the deceased cyclist, a man in his 40s was hit the vehicle.
Gardai said an investigation was now underway and it was appealing for witnesses. The road was sealed off for a period for a forensic review as part of the inquiry.
“A cyclist has died following a traffic collision on Patrick's Street, Dublin 8, at 12.44am on Friday morning 24th March 2017,” the Garda statement said.
“The cyclist, a man in his 40s, was involved in a collision with a car. He was removed by ambulance to St James' Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car was not injured.
“A Garda investigation has begun into the crash and the scene if the incident was closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road at the scene has now re-opened to traffic.”

Last Sunday week another cyclist in his 40s was killed when hit by a car on Conyngham Road near Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
Last month Tonya McEvoy was killed in Co Kildare when she was hit by a car while she was out training.
She was with a training group from Orwell Wheelers at the time.
