Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after the death last night of a woman knocked from her bike by a motorist in Co Kerry last Wednesday.
The number of cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic this year has risen to three, with news emerging today that a woman knocked from her bike in Co Kerry last week has lost her fight for life.
The victim, who was in her 40s, died at Kerry General Hospital in Tralee last night where she had been receiving treatment since being struck by a car in the town last Wednesday night.
The deceased has been named locally as Siobhan Moriarty.
Local media reports have suggested Ms Moriarty was cycling from her own home in Tralee to visit a relation in the nearby Marion Park area of the town when she was struck by a car in the Rathass area, which is close to the hospital where she was taken.
She had been in a critical condition since the collision and it emerged today that she died last night.
Ms Moriarty’s death is the third road fatality involving cyclists since the start of the year. There were five cyclists killed in the Republic in all of last year, a joint 20-year low shared with 2010.
Last Monday, January 28th, a cyclist died when he was knocked from his bike in evening rush hour traffic in Dublin. That collision occurred at City West Road, Brownsbarn Roundabout, Saggart, just before 5.30pm.
While the deceased was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital, he died a short time later at the hospital.
Another cyclist in his 40s was struck by a car at the Kilmurray roundabout in Castletroy on the outskirts of Limerick City on Wednesday, January 8th, and later died from his injuries.
Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to the latest fatality to contact Tralee garda station on 066- 7102300, the Garda confidential line on 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
