An Post’s Bennett aims to build form for Tour of Britain & World Champs

Ireland’s Sam Bennett is again the sole representative from these shores in action for the An Post-Sean Kelly team in Belgium this weekend.

The 22-year-old lines out in an eight-man team that will take in the Schaal Sels (UCI 1.1) in Merksem on Sunday.

He goes into that race in the middle of a very good run of form that saw him take 8th place in the UCI 1.1 GP Stad Zottegem on Tuesday and 7th in the U23 European Championships in Holland the weekend before last.

Bennett forms part of a team this Sunday that includes the Belgian quintet of Niko Eeckhout, Joren Segers, Roy Jans, Niels Wytinck and Kenneth Van Bilsen as well as Australian Scott Law and British rider Mark McNally.

“Sam’s form doesn’t surprise me at all. He has the potential to compete against the big names and he has shown that. It’s just a case of continuing to work hard and the performances will come. He’s in good shape and has a strong mentality so hopefully he will continue his form into the Schaal Sels.”

“The course in Merksem is very flat and windy and I think it will probably come down to a bunch sprint so with a bit of luck Sam and the rest of the team will be up there at the finish.”
