An Post-Sean Kelly enters new ‘rider relationship’ with Bradley Wiggins Foundation

The An Post-Sean Kelly team has entered into a new relationship with the Bradley Wiggins Foundation aimed at bringing talented young riders into the Irish-Belgian squad in the years ahead.

The signing this week of 23-year-old Briton and former Node4-Giordana rider Kieran Frend represents the first such placement into Sean Kelly’s team under the management of Kurt Bogaerts.

The Bradley Wiggins Foundation has been established to promote community participation in sport, run sportives, advance sports leadership and education and to nurture emerging riders.

According to An Post-Sean Kelly, it has become involved with the foundation through one of its former riders Dan Llyod. He is now a member of the foundation.

Frend has recently been in a training camp with Wiggins, who is helping to mentor him. As part of that process, Wiggins and Llyod began talking to An Post-Sean Kelly about placing Frend in the team for 2013 to help him develop further.

In reply to queries from stickybottle, a spokesman for the An Post-Sean Kelly team said while the relationship with Wiggins’ foundation was at an early stage, there was the possibility of similar rider placement cooperation in the years ahead.

He added that Wiggins and Llyod believed the team’s programme and set-up was an ideal environment in which young emerging riders could progress.

“Dan Lloyd is working with Wiggins on this and as he had come through the An Post set-up he knew that the team fits perfectly into this description. They both contacted Kurt at the Tour of Britain this year and discussed Kieran Frend as a possibility of joining the team.”
