An Post, Ireland's national postal service, is set to use a fleet of heavy duty electric cargo bikes for deliveries nationwide.
The new bikes, in the company's green livery, are being supplied by a Dublin-based electric bike dealership.
GreenAer said it was "proud to supply and service An Post with a fleet of Radkutsche Musketiers", describing the bikes as the the best heavy-duty electric trike on the market.
"An Post is ambitiously leading the way when it comes to the electrification of their fleet of delivery vehicles," GreenAer said.
"(They are) re-thinking the way in which they operate and future-proofing their business model to boost efficiency, all the while reducing congestion and emission levels."
GreenAer has landed a nice bit of business for itself as it will initially supply 138 rear-loading bikes to An Post.
The Dublin south inner city-based company will service the bikes and believes the fleet of trikes will soon be doubled by An Post.
At first the bikes will be introduced in Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick.
Olivier Vander Elst of GreenAer.IE told cycling industry news that its contacts with An Post began about 2½ years ago.
“An Post are pioneering this cargo bike revolution in a
country which has shown zero inspiration on the electric bike and cargo bike
front, which so far has focused their efforts on the promotion of electric
cars,” he said.
“They are committed to the complete electrification of
their fleet, with a changed business which is all about e-Commerce and parcels.
“All going well there is scope to double the fleet size
in the future. The postal service has gone to the effort to create new routes
for its staff to improve the efficiency of deliveries.
“We very often see announcements in Ireland of
sustainability drives, but often in low volumes; we’re working from a low base,
so this is real progress. For the workers too this is a big plus.”
