Ambulance helicopter dispatched after cyclist injured in crash with driver

An air ambulance helicopter was dispatched to the scene after a cyclist was injured in a crash with a motorist

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after being injured in a crash with a driver in a car in Co Antrim.

An ambulance and helicopter ambulance
were dispatched to the scene on the Templepatrick Road, with road closures also
put in place.

The crash occurred yesterday just before
lunchtime and the cyclist was transferred from the scene to hospital.

The emergency services were alerted at 12.40pm
and after being attended to by paramedics at the scene the cyclist was taken to
the Royal Victoria Hospital.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland
Ambulance Service confirmed some of the details of the incident.

"We received a report that a
cyclist had been struck by a vehicle at around 12:40pm,” he said of the crash
yesterday.

"An Air Ambulance, emergency
vehicle and doctor were dispatched to the scene.

"We have not established the extent
of the cyclist's injuries at this stage and he is now being treated at the
Royal Victoria Hospital."

The crash is the latest in a run of
serious collisions in which cyclists have been hit by motorists.

Last Sunday a crash occurred in Bangor, Co
Down, when a motorist hit a cyclist and then fled the scene. The cyclist
involve was hospitalised.

The incident occurred a week after Irish
cyclist and married father of five Aidan Fitzpatrick sustained fatal injuries
in a crash out cycling.

Aidan was a member of the Lanterne Rouge
Cycling Club based in Loughinisland, Co Down.
