Amazing time-lapse video shows 7,000 bike parking spaces being built underwater

This is four years work in just 60 seconds and shows the incredible project taking shape - nobody beats the Dutch for cycling infrastructure

This 60-second time lapse video captures four years of construction work in Amsterdam, where a bike parking facility for 7,000 bikes has been built under a stretch of the city's canal network. The new bike park is right beside Central Station in the city and parking is free for most users, with charges only kicking in if a bike is left there for more than 24 hours.

A basin linked to the canal network was drained, the building work completed and then the water allowed to flow in again, covering the project meaning you wouldn't even know it was there.

The second video, below, is a tour inside the new facility, which opened to the public a couple of days ago. It cost €60 million to build and has been opened just after another bike parking centre - for 4,000 bikes - became operational near the North-South metro line in Amsterdam, having been built at a cost of €25 million.

However, neither of the new bike parking facilities is the biggest in the Netherlands, with that distinction going to Utrecht, which boasts a 12,500-bike park.

The 7,000-bike Stationsplein facility was designed by Wurck and is connected underground to the metro hall and nearby Central Station, meaning cyclists can park their bikes and then walk to the metro or train station without even going outside again.
