Allan Peiper is missing the Tour de France with UAE Emirates due to his cancer fight. The Aussie legend has entered treatment again.
Australian cycling legend, and one of Dan Martin’s managers
at UAE Team Emirates, Allan Peiper is missing the Tour de France as he fights
cancer.
Peiper was among a small group of English-speaking stars of
pro cycling during the era of Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche.
He came through the Peugeot team with Roche, Phil Anderson
and Sean Yates, among others.
Now aged 59 years, he retired in 1992 and won stages in the
Giro, Criterium du Dauphine and Paris Nice.
He had faced prostate cancer a number of years ago but was
treated and overcame it.
However, he has now been diagnosed with cancer again and it
has spread to his lungs and ribs.
Peiper had joined UAE Team Emirates to work with Dan Martin
but is now sadly missing from the team car as he will undergo chemotherapy
during the race.
In an interview with RideMedia from his home in Belgium, Peiper said he was looking after himself the way he did when he was a pro cyclist.
“I’m busy with chemotherapy, I’m having my fifth round of
six rounds next Monday,” Peiper explained of his treatment.
“The last round is on July 29th, the day after
the Tour finishes. Obviously I won’t be at the Tour because of the
chemotherapy.”
Peiper said his medical advisers have advised him to keep
riding about three times a week.
This circulates the chemotherapy through his system and also generates cell activity that benefits his immune system.
