With the list of cycling races and leisure events being cancelled growing by Thursday afternoon due to the coronavirus, Cycling Ireland has decided to cancel all events for the next two weeks.
It means all events approved by Cycling Ireland to Sunday fortnight, March 29th, are now cancelled.
While the development is a huge blow to the cycling scene, especially as the road race season only started last weekend, it is understandable as the coronavirus COVID-19 spreads.
The Irish Government
earlier today announced that schools and colleges would close at close of
business today, Thursday, and now
re-open until March 30th at the earliest.
The Government also advised the cancellation of gatherings indoors of 100 people or more and outdoor gatherings of 500 people or more. It means Cycling Ireland’s decision is in line with the Government’s approach.
“Following on from
Government advice this morning, Cycling Ireland announces that all Cycling
Ireland approved events are to be cancelled with immediate effect until and
including March 29th,” the federation said.
“Cycling Ireland will
continue to closely monitor advice from the Public Health teams on the island
of Ireland and a further statement will be announced later this
evening around club activities.
“Cycling Ireland is guided by expert HSE advice and
will physically close our office from tomorrow morning, but all staff will be
operating our business from their homes. We have all prepared to operate
telephones and emails remotely to minimise disruption to our business.
“We understand that this decision will result in inconvenience to event
organisers and disappointment to our membership, however, we are making
this decision in the best interest of our membership and wider community
and in line with Government advice.
“We urge all our members to
follow the advice of the public health bodies until further notice.”
