Just 24 hours after it was announced next Tuesday's round of the Mondello Series was off and the series would be kept under ongoing review, the promoting club has said today that this weekend’s planned youth races are off.

Those youth races had been planned for the Co Kildare track tomorrow, Saturday. Refunds will be available for anyone who has entered already.

Irish Road Club said yesterday that next Tuesday’s Mondello Series race was off and that the series was being kept under review. It said the development followed recent racing incidents - crashes - and criticism on social media, which remarked on how the races were organised.

However, the Irish Road Club said in its statement yesterday the youth races it was organising tomorrow were unaffected and would go ahead as planned.

But today in a brief update the club said those youth races were now off. It explained that any further bike racing on the Mondello circuit was suspended until further notice.

“It is with great regret that all cycling activities at Mondello motor racing circuit are suspended until further notice,” Irish Road Club said in its latest brief update, on Friday evening.

“This impacts the scheduled youth events on Saturday, July 3rd, which are now cancelled. We apologise for the late notice and will be in contact in the coming days to arrange refunds.”

When it released its initial statement on Thursday, only next Tuesday's round of the Mondello Series was called off. And it seemed the series would continue after that, but would be kept under review. However, the situation has now changed, will all bike racing at Mondello suspended until further notice.

In Thursday's statement the Irish Road Club also defended the safety precautions taken for every round of the Mondello Series and have defended the general set-up at those events. The club said recent comments on social media alleging inadequate first aid cover at the venue were not accurate and were “offensive and disrespectful”.

It added first aid cover was in line with that specified by Cycling Ireland, was “at pandemic level” and that there was access to the Mondello medical centre if needed, including “defibrillator and intubation kits”.
