All Irish bike racing suspended, riders urged to bring masks while training

Cycling Ulster has encouraged cyclists to bring a mask with them out training in the event they go into a shop, or other premises, and need to put one on. It has also now been confirmed, as expected, that all forms of racing are suspended on all parts of the island of Ireland

Cycling Ireland Cycling Ulster have both confirmed, as expected, that the new restrictions aimed at stopping the spread of Covid-19 mean racing is now suspended for a four-week period starting tomorrow.

Cycling Ulster has urged its members to comply with all
other aspects of the Northern Executive’s Covid-19 public health restrictions
and advice.

Furthermore, the association has urged cyclists to bring
a mask with them when training in the event you need to enter a shop while out
on your bike.

In the Republic racing had already been suspended, with
the exception of some National Track Championships events last weekend.

However, now that there are no more national
championships planned in any discipline until next year, all racing is
currently suspended in the Republic.

While the four-week suspension in the North begins
tomorrow, Friday, the three-week suspension in the Republic began nine days ago,
meaning 12 days remain.

However, as Covid-19 has significantly worsened on both
sides of the Border there is a very real prospect that when the current
lock-down periods expire, new restrictions may be introduced in all, or some,
parts of the island.

For example, Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan have just been
moved up to Level 4 until Tuesday, November 10th, at which point the situation
will be reviewed by the government.

 “With the ongoing
increase in people testing positive for Covid-19, Cycling Ulster want to remind
members of the need to follow the regulations and carry out good practice while
participating in cycling activities to help curb the rise in transmission,” Cycling
Ulster said.

When taking part in a cycling activity, participants
should practice two metres physical distancing before and after training
sessions as well as during any breaks.

“This guidance is particularly important for those taking
part in group spins. Social gatherings that occur at coffee stops for example
should be avoided.

“Members are also encouraged to carry a mask when on a
training spin to ensure you have one if required, such as when entering a shop.”
