Declan Quigley will trade his Orwell kit for a pretty sweet gig commentating on the Giro for Eurosport
Irish cycling fans may have nobody to cheer for in the Giro d’Italia which gets underway tomorrow, but they will at least have the benefit of an all Irish commentary team when the turn in to Eurosport to catch the action.
Former World No 1 Sean Kelly is back in the hot seat to bring fans the benefit of his knowledge and insights and in the lead role another Irishman, Declan Quigley, takes on the mantle from David Harmon.
Quigley is well known in Irish cycling circles, having worked in a range of media and promotional roles in the sport here.
He has commentated on cycling many times before, with one of his most recent gigs being the criterium Tour Series in the UK last season. And while he is also well known in the motor racing world for similar roles, securing the main job on the Giro will be his most high profile job in cycling to date.
“Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
“It’ll be fun and it’ll certainly be a thrill working with Sean who’s a childhood hero of mine. I’ve done a few races for Eurosport now and I’ve enjoyed them. So it’ll be interesting to do a three week race and call it as it evolves.”
Quigley describes himself has a “club cyclist” and has been cycling for two decades. He cycles and races in the colours of Orwell Wheelers, one of the largest clubs in the country which is based in south Dublin.
“I'd been an F1 commentator for 13 years, but for the last couple of years I've been branching out into other sports. Funny, I always said that I wanted to keep cycling separate though - not a job, just a love. But I've been doing more and more cycling commentary in the last few years and I have to say it’s been very enjoyable.”
