This photo of two cyclists two abreast on a road in Co Dublin has gone viral and provoked a massive debate about cyclists on Irish roads.
In Britain and other countries the ‘them Vs us’ war on the streets between cyclists and motorists is perhaps more in evidence that in Ireland.
But as this incident shows, we have our own battle of the byways here too.
The shot was taken earlier this week at Strawberry Beds, Dublin 20, on the way to Lucan.
It appears to have been sent into the Garda Checkpoints Dublin Facebook page who published it on Monday (see original post below) with the following message purporting to come from the driver who sent in the photo:
"Does this piss anyone else off?”it starts.
“The one on the outside kept waving me past on dangerous bends. Followed them for about 3 minutes until the driver behind me got pissed off and started beeping at them and then they started shouting obscenities at him.
“Surely they should have to be in single file. What if I tried to overtake on one of the bends he waved me past on and a car was coming the opposite direction?"
The Facebook page said it was “From a follower of the page”.
One of the cyclists, Marc O’Brien, saw the post and replied:
“The cyclist on the inside is me and the reason we were not closer was the state of the road,” he said.
“We were out from the edge due to damage and broken road surfaces. You were waved trough at straight sections where we could see ahead and you were safe to go.
“Plus why would you overtake on a bend in any situation. If you cycled you would understand the road conditions and drive to suit the road not your mood.
“They guy behind you passed us close intentionally and made his feelings clear as he did so!
“It is safer to ride 2 abreast due to the fact every road is shared usage. We singled out when it was safe to do so if you remember.
“If you’re going to tell a story tell the whole story and not just the version you like.”
Since then, the post has attracted almost 300 comments – with some of those provoking more than 70 replies and counting.
Have a look at the ‘debate’ below and let us know your thoughts.
