The Government has moved all 26 counties in the Republic to Level 5 of the 'Living with Covid-19' plan, with people now being told to stay within 5km of home when exercising.

That means that until at least the end of January you must stay within a 5km radius of your home when cycling or taking any other form of exercise from midnight tonight.

Gyms and swimming pools will also close, and golf and tennis - which had been permitted - will also close.

The pin drop site 5kmfromhome.com lets you instantly map the 5km radius around your home no matter where you live.

Just click on the link and allow the device access to
your location and then choose the ‘5km zone’ option and the device instantly
throws a red zone over the 5km radius around your home.

The general advice now from Government is that people should stay home, save for essential reasons or essential workers going to work. And while people are allowed to exercise outdoors, the 5km rule now applies.

It’s not the first time people in the Republic have been
confined to a kilometre-based radius around their homes for exercising.

At the start of the pandemic the exercise zone was just 2km but it was increased to 5km in early May, before being scrapped completely.

Its re-introduction now was anticipated and it comes as the Republic tries to reduce the number of Covid-19 cases, which have been increasing significantly over the last week.

Increased social mixing over Christmas and a new variant of Covid-19 has resulted in a very significant spike in cases over the past week.

It is still planned to keep schools open during the period until the end of January, though the schools will not return until January 11th, later than had been planned.
