A total of 39 cycling clubs have received grants for equipment under the latest rounds of grants awarded by the Department of Sport. Some of the grants and less than €1,000, though many are over €10,000 and one is close to €100,000.
The biggest sum - €94,669 - was awarded to Western Lakes Cycling Club for the refurbishment of a club building and to purchase equipment. The club said the award of the grant was wondering news, adding it would be spent on its new cycling centre.
"We would also like to thank Mayo County Council for providing us with the facility, and well done to the amazing committee, past and present, for the tireless work they have put into this over the past number of years," the clubs said, adding it was also very thankful to the local councillors and TDs who had helped with the application.

The grants across all sport amounted to €150 million and were paid under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP), which opened in 2020; the biggest round of funding ever for clubs and other sporting groups across the country.
The application process opened in 2020 and closed last March, with the successful applicants announced today, Friday, by the Department of Sport. While cycling clubs did reasonably well, grants were award to clubs, schools and other sporting bodies across all codes, with sports like GAA, soccer and rugby taking a large percentage of the money.
In total there were applications from over 3,000 sports clubs and other organisations and 1,900 of those received funding. Some €6 million in funding was held back in expectation that some unsuccessful candidates will appeal and win.
