Here's a list of the new Dublin Bikes stations. Their construction begins in coming days. But Minister for Transport Shane Ross has been accused of stalling real progress with the bike share scheme in the capital.
16 new Dublin Bikes stations about to be built
Dublin City Council will in the next week begin construction on 16 new Dublin Bikes stations.
But more investment has been urged for the years ahead.
The expansion set to get underway will bring the bike sharing scheme to a much wider area, mostly in north Dublin.
It has been welcomed by the Green Party but it also wants €30 million per year more released for further expansions.
Neasa Hourigan, the Green Party Dáil candidate in Dublin Central said Dublin Institute of Technology students at Grangegorman would have new bike stands on their doorsteps.
And she was pleased with the news other the other scheme extensions.
"But we now need to extend the scheme up through Stoneybatter and into Cabra,” she said.
“The Dublin Bikes scheme has been a wonderful new amenity. But it has been held back by the drip feed of funding."
She blamed Minister for Transport Shane Ross TD and the National Transport Authority for the poor flow of funding.
“Since Dublin Bikes were launched in 2009 they have been an extraordinary success. But the roll-out has been delayed due to lack of funding.
“We are only at phase two of a fourteen phase scheme that was due to be completed two years ago.
“Areas like Cabra and Drumcondra should not be waiting years for a scheme that has proved its worth and costs a fraction of the money it takes to maintain our motorway network.
“I am calling on Minister Ross to release funding of €30m per year so that all phases of the scheme can be rolled out over the next three years.
“This would be a tangible investment in sustainable transport that would benefit residents, and visitors to Dublin.”
