15 riders miss time cut at Rás Mumhan, winner fined his prize money

A breakaway pushes ahead at Rás Mumhan. But it was at the back of the field where some good men got caught out.

The commissaire has been busy on the opening stage of Kerry Group Rás Mumhan, with no fewer than 16 sanctions or warnings handed down.

Stage winner Tom Mazzone (Isle of Man) has lost his prize money because he did not turn up to the presentation promptly enough.

As well as the penalties, 15 riders have missed the time cut and it looks like their race is over already.

Under UCI rules all riders have the winner’s time plus 20 per cent to finish the stage. If they do not cross the line within that 20 per cent they are outside the time limit.

In stage races it means they are out and cannot start the next day. And in a one-day race it results in the riders not being credited with an official finishing placing.

In stage races riders can apply for an exemption, especially if they had really bad luck. And if granted, they would be readmitted.

However, while a lax system had always operated in Ireland, it has tightened in recent years.

The UCI has insisted that time limits be more rigidly enforced in events with a UCI ranking, such as the An Post Rás.

And in amateur events, like Rás Mumhan, there are increased concerns that riders far behind the peloton pose a safety risk.

Rolling road closures cannot be extended to riders way down the course. And corners cannot be kept closed by static marshals for very long periods.

This evening’s opening stage at Rás Mumhan was short and fast. And some of the riders who lost contact finished between 30 and 58 minutes behind the winner.

Stage victor Tom Mazzone finished the stage into Killorglin in a time of 2hrs 11mins 25secs, for an average speed of 44km per hour.

The large number of penalties and warnings handed down to riders and those driving team cars  resulted from a variety of infringements.
