12 cycling projects get €3.3 million in funding across nine counties

Greenways have done very well in the latest round of funding for outdoor projects in Ireland. A total of 12 cycling projects in nine counties are sharing €3.3 million

The Irish Government has allocated over €3.3 million to cycling projects based in, or going through, nine counties.

The counties in the money include Mayo, Cavan, Westmeath, Tipperary, Offaly, Monaghan, Waterford, Louth and Roscommon with multiple allocations for different projects in some counties.

In total the Department of Rural and Community Development has awarded nine large projects up to €500,000 and 35 smaller projects up to €200,000 each, of which 12 are cycling projects.

They are being funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme in collaboration with Fáilte Ireland and the National Tourism Development Authority.

The scheme provides funding for the development and maintenance of outdoor amenities such as trails, walkways, cycleways and blueways.

A total of €8.4 million has been allocated to 44
projects, on foot of applications made in 2019 under Measures 2 and 3 of the
Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
