Dublin Fire Brigade has shared this photo of the damage done by a cyclist’s head in a crash in the city last night. The messaging with the photo is interesting and looks like progress to us.
Dublin Fire Brigade has issued a warning to all road users after a cyclist and a driver in a car collided on the south side of the city last night.
The fire brigade shared a photograph of the vehicle involved, with the mark left by the cyclist’s head visible.
It is not clear if the cyclist was wearing a helmet or not. For their sake let’s hope so, considering this impact.
It is also worth noting the message published by Dublin Fire Brigade when sharing the photo.
“Fire fighter paramedics from Donnybrook responded to a car v cyclist RTC last night,” it said.
“The spider-web on the windscreen was caused by the cyclist's head. Slow down, look, and be seen. One to hospital with spinal precautions.”
The words were addressed to all road users; good sensible advice to everyone.
It was messaging that didn’t target the cyclist or ignore the fact people driving vehicles all have responsibilities.
In the past these messages have at times focussed exclusively on warning about cyclist behaviour. And they’ve also been pre-occupied with helmets and hi-vis.
It’s a welcome development that the safety advice in this case is aimed at everyone. Their decision to share the photo is also welcome.
The windscreen was broken by the cyclist’s head; information that cyclist’s may factor in when choosing to wear a helmet or not.
