We're just seven months into 2014 and already here on stickybottle we have sadly reported on the deaths of nine cyclists; compared to five in all of last year.
While the circumstances of those fatalities are still under investigation, the death of any bike rider focuses all of our minds on our own safety on the roads.
With that in mind, please take a couple of minutes to have a look at the video above from the Road Safety Authority (RSA). It's essentially a short clip that rattles quickly through a series of safety tips specifically for cyclists.
There’s a tendency for racing cyclists or experienced non-racers to assume these safety messages don't apply to them and that they already know everything there is to know about safety on the roads.
The reality is that it's not just our own behaviour that influences how safe we are. A dangerous road user we have the misfortune to come across can cause catastrophic damage all by themselves.
So it really is no harm to have a look at this video, if only to re-engage with what you already feel you know and to make you stop and think the next time you're out and about.
It will also provide some invaluable advice for you if you're getting back on the bike after a period away from the sport or it you're new to the bike game.
See you on the road, and stay safe!
