Greg Swinand may be edging towards his mid 40s, but the big man from UCD CC has been in fantastic form this season and has continued his run today with victory in the opening stage of the Tour of Ulster.

He came home after the 100 mile opening stage ahead of Dave Watson of North Down CC.

Swinand has been in great form this season, with a move from his long-term club Usher Irish Road Club to UCD CC having reinvigorated a career already endowed with considerable results; the national veterans’ road and time trial titles to name but two.

Now aged 46 years, he opened his account in the colours of UCD way back in early March when he won the Newbridge GP in Co Kildare.

He was at the head of a three-man breakaway comprising team mates Anthony Walsh and U23 international Sean McKenna.

The trio made the main break on the day and rode away from the other original members of that move to take a clean sweep of the podium.

In the middle of last month Swinand soloed to victory at the Stamullen GP on a very tough course and was 2nd to team mate Eoin Morton in the Ben McKenna Memorial just two weeks earlier after the pair went clear in a two-man escape.

Swinand was also second in the Boyne GP to Ryan Sherlock the day before St Patrick’s Day; bested in a two-up gallop after they had spent most of the race out front together.

We interviewed him a few months back, have a read here: "I try to not get fired, not get divorced, keep the kids happy and still win bike races”

And we have lots more from today on the way.
