Ryan Mullen can afford to smile because no matter what happens for the rest of the afternoon, his TT performance at the world championships today is one of the most amazing performances by an Irishman at any world championships.
Ryan Mullen has delivered the performance of his life on a time-trial bike today and at the time of writing he is in the hotseat at the UCI elite world championships in Doha.
The Cannondale-Drapac man set an insane time of 46:04 for the 40-kilometre blast around the desert and though the more established names are yet to finish, Mullen has set an extremely high benchmark.
His closest challenger right now is Belgian Yves Lampaert but he is well short of Mullen's time, some 23 seconds back.
Some of those who were expected to go well, like Giro d'Italia TT stage winner Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) and Luke Durbridge (Australia) were well shy off Mullen's mark.
As we type, Tony Martin, Tom Dumoulin and reigning champion Vasil Kiryienka (Belarus) are all on the course.
We'll have news on where Mullen finishes as soon as results are confirmed.
