Strong start by Philip Lavery in Canada; 5th on stage 1 at Tour de Beauce (UCI 2.2)

Philip Lavery riding in the colours of the H&R Block Canadian team, second from the left, begins his campaign in Canada with a very strong 5th place on the opening stage yesterday.

Philip Lavery may have left it late to make his way to Canada for the Tour de Beauce which opened today, but there was little sign of jet lag in the legs of the Dubliner when he barrelled in for 5th place on stage 1.

Based in France this season but guesting with the H&R Block team over the next six days, Lavery bagged the result in the group sprint to the line after 165km today.

He had been in Dublin at the weekend, where he honoured a prior engagement on Sunday to appear as a star turn at the Wicklow 200 sportive run by the Irish Veteran Cyclists' Association. However, his departure yesterday to fly across the Atlantic for the first of six stages in Canada today does not appear to have taken the edge of his purple patch of form of late.

Three weeks ago he took victory in the Prix des Vallons in Schweighouse-sur-Moder in France. The race was the third of six rounds of the DN2 Coupe de France. That followed on from wins in the first stage of the Tour de Franche Comté, the Souvenir Jean Lacroix and the Tour du Charolais. He took those wins in the colours of his AC Bisontine team.

His win today, in a race with the same UCI rating as the An Post Rás, comes against a field featuring a number of national selections and Pro Continental teams, including Philip Deignan's Unitedhealthcare and Matt Brammeier's Champion System.

Deignan was 11th today, minding himself against splits of a few seconds in the bunch sprint with a view to an all out assault on the general classification. Brammeier was down to start but is not in the field.

Dubliner Anthony Walsh (Astellas Oncology Cycling Team), who is returning after a broken collarbone, came home in a group some 1:05 down on the winner and overall leader, Belgian Jasper Stuyven (Bontrager Cycling Team).

A good week in Canada could set Lavery up nicely to try and secure a contract in the pro ranks for next year, with the race a good shop window to showcase what he can do.

Deignan is one of the favourites to win the event outright and take a stage win when the road goes up later in the race, with Thursday's stage 3 featuring a summit finish. There is also a hilly TT on Friday and a lumpy penultimate stage on Saturday, with a 10 per cent climb to be tackled 12 times on a circuit in Québec City.
