Race the Rás began in 2011 as a way of raising much needed funds for charity. It runs in tandem with the An Post Rás; the international bike race dating back to the 1952 and covering 1,200km over eight consecutive days.

Race The Rás consists of sponsored amateur cyclists riding the same route as the An Post Rás, on the same day as the Rás itself, except we start a few hours ahead of the professionals and make every effort not to be caught!

Join us on this unique and epic leisure cycle in May 2013 and prepare for the experience of a lifetime! Funds raised from Race the Rás 2013 will go to a very worthy cause, the National Breast Cancer Research Institute

We are fortunate to have former professional cycling legend Paul McCormack returning from America to join us for all eight stages this year. Paul is the last rider to win the Rás in two consecutive years; 1987 and 1988 and one of the true "Men of the Ras".

Philip Cassidy, another strong man of the Ras and two-time winner, will also be on board this year so it is a fantastic opportunity to ride with these greats of the past. Indeed, we would encourage all past Ras riders to come out and do a stage or two and enjoy the atmosphere of Rás day.

Many GAA and sporting stars have taken to the bike and completed stages in the past few years including Mick Galway, Sean Óg O'Hailpin, John Maughan, Declan Darcy, Paul Early, Evan Kelly, Paul Clarke and many more from both the cycling and GAA families.

The event is not a race. Our riders are split into an A and B group starting out each morning. We ride at good touring pace to the stage finish with just one fifteen minute refreshment break at about two thirds distance.

Each group works as a team and has full back-up with them, which includes a following vehicle with supplies of food and drink and a facility to get you going again very quickly after any mechanical problems.

A shortened stage option is available this year with a C group starting from the feed station each day and covering the last third of each stage. This will accommodate less experienced cyclists and general sports fans who would like to experience the buzz of a Rás stage.

Riders have the option of riding a single stage, a selection of consecutive stages or a shortened stage option. Why not get a team from your club for a fantastic experience on Race the Rás?

Entry is online and is available by visiting www.racetheras.com
