LIVE: O'Loughlin flying in key breakaway at U23 Tour Flanders

Michael O'Loughlin is putting in a fantastic ride at the U23 Tour of Flanders this afternoon, Saturday, in Belgium.

 

Michael O'Loughlin is putting in a storming ride at the U23 Tour of Flanders which was underway at the time of writing on Saturday afternoon.

The young Irishman, who is only in the early months of his U23 career having been Ireland's top junior last year, was in a five-man escape group that got clear very early in the race.

With some 100km remaining of the 177km race, the breakaway the young Irishman was in had a gap hovering around four minutes.

He was away with Bohdan Musiienko (Ukraine), Yevgeniy Gidich (Kazakhstan), Alexander Cowan (Canada) and Filip Bengtsson (Sweden).

The Tour of Flanders is part of the U23 Nations Cup and features some of the best talents from around the world.

All are vying for crucial points that will go towards qualifying teams for the World Championships later this year.

With O'Loughlin on the national team are: Eddie Dunbar, Angus Fyffe, Matthew Teggart, David Montgomery and Sean McKenna.

There are 27 teams of six riders in the 177-kilometre race which was won last year by Australian Alex Edmondson.
