Nicolas Roche celebrates his first victory in Team Sky colours on the podium at La Vuelta; watch the highlights below.
A man who always seems to perform well at the Vuelta a Espana, Nicolas Roche continued that trend today when he took a coveted stage win on the five-hour stage 18.
It was the second Grand Tour victory of his career, having taken stage 2 of the same race in 2013 and worn the leader’s red jersey.
Roche’s hopes of a strong ride overall this time out were dealt a blow with some crashes earlier in the race, the after effects of which lingered a lot long that he would have hoped.
However, the Team Sky man was on the attack again today, going clear in the early move of 25 men and proving too strong for the rest.
All but three of the move were absorbed by a reduced peloton, but Roche fought all the way to the finish and really pressed for home from the cat 1 ascent of Puerto de la Quesera with 20km of racing remaining.
And when he arrived at the finish in Riaza at the end of stage with Haimar Zubeldia (Trek Factory Racing) just ahead of the main field he pounced for a fantastic win.
You can have a look at the final 20km or so in the clip below.
