The large Irish contingent in the crowd at the BMX World Championships in Zolder went nuts when one of the men in green landed the national team's first gold medal, as the clip below reveals. Above, the delighted new world champion Kelvin Batey on the podium in Zolder.
Kelvin Batey has become Ireland's latest world cycling champion by taking the Masters title at the World BMX Championships in Zolder, Belgium, this afternoon.
He won the title in New Zealand two years ago in his first season after moving from the pro ranks to the Masters category and took silver last year.
Batey, who was born in Britain but declared for Ireland in 2010, progressed through the qualifying rounds today to take his place in the final again.
And once he got his nose out front in that final he was unstoppable; never really being seriously threatened and making it look very easy.
While he is competing in the Masters' category - for riders in their early 30s - the championships cater for competitors as young as 5-years-old and a team of young Irish riders has travelled to Belgium.
Batey's gold has been the only Irish medal so far and it was no surprise to see the Irish fans erupt in celebration as he rocketed to the title.
Batey is a former British pro No 1 and multi national champion there.
He qualified to ride the 2008 Beijing Olympics for Great Britain but was forced to miss out because of injury.
And while he looked on course to qualify for the London Olympics with the Irish team in 2012, he crashed in the last qualifying race and missed out by one point.
