Lydia Boylan (Team WNT) has taken her third consecutive road race title at the National Championships in Co Wexford this afternoon.

The UK-based Dubliner went into the event the clear favourite and proved ready and able to handle the pressure that went with it.

On the last lap, just before the halfway point of the 20km circuit, the race was forced to stop briefly to allow the men’s field pass.

However, that unwelcome interruption clearly didn’t impact Boylan and at the finish she stormed in again to win.

She claimed victory from Lauren Creamer (NCC Group-Kuota-Torelli) and Ellen McDermott (EDCO Continental).

Boylan broke clear solo after the race had been restarted. She went on to take what was a comfortable win in the end in front of a group of 10 led home by Creamer.

While many of the riders in the Masters events yesterday said the course was more testing than they expected, others said the climbs were over very quickly.

And today in the women’s race the field did not split significantly on the short sharp Codd’s Lane climb about 5km before the finish or the two other main drags on the course.

Riders were indeed dropped out the back of the peloton and small numbers never got back on. However, any splitting that occurred up front was followed by a regrouping.

And when the women took the bell to go out onto the last lap, there was still a peloton of 20 riders, from the 36 who entered.

More to follow.
