Irish riders make their move in Tour North stage 2 but visitor wins

After a very hard opener yesterday that saw 28 riders contest the finish, Sunday morning's stage at the Tour of the North was a short and sharp TT. The home riders performed well in the Sunday morning TT at the Tour of the North, but it was the Ribble Pro Cycling team from the UK that won again.

After Jacob Tipper sprinted in at the head of a 28 man lead group at the end of stage 1 yesterday, the TT saw his team mate Zeb Kyffin win and take the race lead.

Kyffin was best of the quality field on Sunday morning in a time of nine minutes and thirteen seconds.

The 6.2km test started at the entrance to Portglenone Forest Park, before going up Tully Hill followed by a flat and fast run to the finish just outside Ahoghill.

Kyffin beat Reece Wood of Zappi Racing, also from the UK, by 11 seconds; a significant margin over a short course, even if some of it was uphill.

And in 3rd place came yesterday's stage 1 runner-up, David Montgomery of Kinning Cycles.

The Irish rider filled 3rd place this time; some 16 seconds off the stage winner and new race leader Kyffin.

Next, in 4th place, was another one of the Irish riders; Craig McAuley. The Caldwell Cycles man was 20 seconds off the winner.

One of the emerging riders of the year at home so far, Donal Shearer, took 5th place in the test; some 21 seconds down in the colours of Phoenix CC.

Kyffin now leads overall from Wood by 11 seconds with Montgomery, clearly in great form, next at 16 seconds followed by McAuley at 20 seconds.

On Sunday afternoon the riders face the 105km stage 3. It takes in five laps of the Roguery circuit. The Roguery climb, at 15 per cent, features each lap.
