Adam Stenson has won the fourth stage of the Junior Tour of Wales in brilliant style this afternoon.
The NRPT-Magnet.ie man outsprinted his two breakaway companions at the end of the 86 kilometre journey from Abergavenny to Hardwick.
It’s the biggest and most significant win of Stenson’s career and comes at a time when places on the national team for next month’s UCI World Road Race Championships in the US are really up for grabs.
The Celbridge youngster did his chances of selection no harm whatsoever when he attacked late on the stage and took with him Charlie Quarterman (Zappi Cycling Team) and Harrison Jones (Pedal Heaven RT).
That trio worked well together but really had to knuckle down to pull out any time on the peloton behind.
With Stenson, a first-year junior, starting the stage 11th overall at 1:46 he was still viewed as a threat to the race lead, which is why the peloton really drove it behind.
The leading trio only had a handful of seconds in the final kilometres so had to remain honest but when the finishing line loomed, Stenson put the hammer down and easily out-kicked those with him.
He’s the best of the Irish with one stage remaining tomorrow, that being a savage 89 kilometre stage to the summit finish of the category one Tumble Mountain on Monday.
En route there, the riders will crest two category two climbs as well as three intermediate sprint points.
The 12-strong Irish representation are still are very much in the hunt for jerseys there - while Stenson is also in the mix for the best young rider classification.
It's been a good day today, Sunday, for the Irish and in this morning's stage three circuit race Stenson's teammate Jake Gray finished ninth and followed it up with 10th this afternoon.
