Six of the best | Races open for business as season gains pace

With the first weekend of racing done and dusted - and some great action unfolding across the country - the season is gathering pace as riders start to work their way towards the first stage races of the year.

In this piece, we'll bring you through the next races down for the decision in the fortnight to St Patrick's Day. But before we do that, let's give an initial brief mention to some of those stage races that are now not too far away.

Rás Mhaigh Eo is being promoted by Westport Covey Wheelers on March 21st and 22nd and you can enter that by following this link. Rás na nÓg, the coveted stage races for all youth categories, is being run by Jons Drogheda Wheelers the same weekend, March 21st and 22nd. And then looking ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend - which runs from from Friday, April 3rd, to Monday, April 6th - there are two stages races for seniors-juniors. Boyne GP, by Jons Drogheda Wheelers

Jons Drogheda Wheelers - one of those clubs that organises events through the season - opens its 2026 account with the Boyne GP this Saturday, March 7th, from Rathkenny GAA Club, Co Meath, over a 16km lap. It's the only race on that day so a bumper crowd is expected, especially as there are three races on offer - one of C1s (96km), one for C2s (80km) and one for C3s (64km). John Haldane Memorial, by Newry Wheelers CC

Newry Wheelers always make a great contribution to the domestic scene with the many races they organise and they are out of the traps this year with John Haldane Memorial this Sunday, March 8th. Held on the Tandragee Circuit in Co Down, there is a race for C1-C2 riders, with small handicap, and a C3 race. You can enter and get more information by following this link.

Sliabh Luachra Clasacai, by Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club

The four-race Sliabh Luachra Clasaici, takes place in Knocknagree, Co Cork, on Sunday, March 8th, and is promoted by Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club. There races on for: C1 Denis Sheehan Cup, C2 Willie Reen Cup, C3 John Fleming Cup and and Women's Sliabh Luachra Clasacai, so there really is something for everyone. Lucan Grand Prix, by Lucan CRC

Always a really competitive fixture that attracts a big turn-out, the Lucan GP is being run on Saturday week, March 14th, from Dunsany GAA Club in Co Meath. Promoted by Lucan CRC, there are no fewer than four races on the day - for C1s (98km), C2s (98km), C3s (80km) and women (63km). You can enter and get more details by following this link.

Donal Crowley-Kay Stratton Memorials, by Blarney CC

Organised by Blarney Cycling Club in Blarney, Co Cork, the Donal Crowley and Kay Stratto Memorials are always a big day of racing in Munster and really prestigious races to win, and 'National Grade' events. There are three races being held - for C1s (140km), C2s (90km) and C3-women (90km). You can enter and get more details by following this link.


Tues, March 17th


Bobby Power Memorial, by Carrick Wheelers

Another of the big Irish clubs, Carrick Wheelers are back this year with the only race being held on the island on St Patrick's Day, March 17th. The Bobby Power Memorial promotion from Clonea GAA Club, Clonea Power, Co Waterford, features the headline event for C1s (100km), C2 Past Members Memorial (80km) and C3 Tommy Sheehan Cup (60km).
