Damien Shaw thrilled the home crowd in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, when he saw off breakaway companion Mark Dowling to win the ‘Destination Sport Criterium’.

The Team Asea man and DID Dunboyne’s Dowling were left to fight it out for the €500 winner’s prize when the man they were clear with came unstuck and crashed on the last 1.1km lap in the 55-minute event on Friday evening.

Simon Ryan (Mego Racing), a very good sprinter who has been in fantastic form this year, would have fancied his chances in a fight to the line against the eventual winner and runner-up.

But the best he could do was hold on for 3rd place after he fell on the last lap and remounted.

Up ahead, it was Dowling who led out the sprint to the line before Shaw came around him and took victory.

The race saw fast and furious action from the start, with the in-form UCD man Eoin Morton rocketing off the front with Dowling and Ryan as well as Glenn Kinning (Kinning Cycles).

Shaw suffered an early puncture and was forced to take a lap out. But as soon as he got restarted he jumped clear with James Davenport (DID Dunboyne).

And while he would shake off Davenport, he caught the leaders alone after a chase lasting two laps on the tight and fast circuit.

Shaw made the junction and when Morton and Kinning lost their places up front, it came down to a fight between three on the last lap, with Ryan’s crash providing some unexpected drama.

In the A3 race, David Casserly of promoting club Lakeside Wheelers stormed clear midway through the 45 minute event and was never caught.

After he took victory solo, Micheál Fitzgerald of Clonmel CC took 2nd from John Clarke of Navan Road Club.
