Irish cyclist Sam Bennett's incredible week continues with his fourth victory at the Tour of Turkey. He powered in today after a very hard finale and physical sprint to win.
Sam Bennett wins stage 5 Tour of Turkey
Having already had the race of his life with three wins in a row, Sam Bennett has made it four at the Tour of Turkey.
The Irish sprinter claimed a hat trick on opening three stages before losing the race lead yesterday.
But he was back to his very best in the sprint today on stage 5. He coped really well without some of his team mates, some of whom were impacted by a crash.
And at the end of a really physical sprint the Carrick-on-Suir man stormed home for win number four this week.
Ahmet Orken of the Turkish National Team got up for 2nd place. And just behind in 3rd was Simone Consonni (UAE Team Emirates).
Today’s fifth stage took the field 166km from Selcuk to Izmir.
Bennett's Bora-hansgrohe shook things up a little today; sending lead-out man Shane Archbold clear in a breakaway.
However, while a couple of the others from the team were caught in a crash, Bennett still coped well on the late climbs.
And once it was clear he was in the lead group over the top of the final climb, he was the obvious the man to beat.
In the final sprint he did a lot of the work for himself, nudging his way towards the front. And once he got a clear run at the line and really hit the afterburners, nobody could get close.
Sam Bennett will also have a fantastic chance tomorrow to make it five when the WorldTour stage race concludes tomorrow in Istanbul.
As a result of winning four stages from the five so far, Bennett still leads the points classification.
He has 60 points and is seven ahead of Edward Theuns (Trek – Segafredo), who has been 2nd twice to the Irishman this week.
And in 3rd place in that green jersey classification is Consonni on 46 points.
More to follow.
