Deignan wins Tour of Gila after climbing demonstration on 'Monster' summit

Philip Deignan has taken overall victory at Tour of the Gila, moving himself into contention for a move back to pro cycling's top tier

Unitedhealthcare professional Philip Deignan has shown he is back to his best by climbing his way into the winner's red jersey on the closing stage of the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico today. Deignan lost a little time to stage winner Franciso Mancebo (ESP 5 Hour Energy), who took off on the tough climb to the finish at Pinos Altos.

With six categorised climbs today the 100.6 mile stage had 9,131 feet of climbing.

Deignan had been fourth on the opening stage on Wednesday and was fifth in the time trial on Friday to move himself into third overall going into yesterday's criterium stage.

That failed to shake up the overall standings and going into today the Donegal man had 19 seconds to make up on overnight leader Janier Acevedo Calle, a Colombian riding with Jamis-Hagens Berman, and seven seconds to claw back on second placed on GC this morning Christopher Baldwin (Bissel Cycling).

Deignan was simply too strong for them in the tough finale and pulled back the time he needed on the tough finishing hill to take the overall win, placing third on the stage and also winning the climbers' classification. He lost 18 seconds to the stage winner and was 10 seconds down on second-placed Matt Cooke (Champion Systems-Stan’s NoTubes).

After a couple of quiet seasons in which his top form eluded him, Philip Deignan is back on top of the podium, taking overall victory at the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico today

However, the overnight leader Janier Acevedo Calle was four minutes down today, back in 8th place as massive gaps opened in the field on what was a gruelling final stage. The challenge of Christopher Baldwin also fell away as he lost 7:32 today.

In the end, in the fight for the overall victory it was Phillip Gaimon (Bissell Cycling) who ran Deignan closest, finishing just one place and two seconds behind him on the stage, but 28 seconds adrift overall. The final place on the podium went to today's stage victor Mancebo, who was 37 seconds down overall.

Deignan timed his run to perfection today and had the legs to tame the challenge of the strongest in the field, not to mention the savage course. It appears the 2009 Vuelta stage winner is back with a bang.

The only other Irish rider in race, Stephen Clancy (Novo Nordisk) was a non-finisher today.
